A dozen states and Union territories have come on board to offer motor vehicle tax or road tax concessions while buying new vehicles in lieu of scrapping old ones. Retail inflation surges to 3-month high of 6.5%
Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Monday showed retail inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, rose an annual 6.5% in January, higher than December's 5.7% and above the 6% recorded in January last year. The food price index rose nearly 6% in January, higher than the 4.2% in December. Rural inflation outpaced urban inflation rising 6.9%. Urban inflation was at 6%.

SC seeks Centre’s response on BBC documentary ban
The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre seeking its response for blocking a BBC documentary, ‘India: The Modi Question’, and also directed the government to place before it the original records of the decision-making process for its perusal. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh, however, turned down a plea for an interim order to direct the Centre to make public its blocking order and said that it would itself examine the document on the next date of hearing.

Vodafone Idea gets a lifeline, govt to hold 33% stake
The Centre finally stepped in to resurrect Vodafone Idea, the ailing telecom operator, and is going ahead to pick up around 33% stake in the company to emerge as the largest shareholder. The move came after promoters Aditya Birla group and Vodafone Plc assured that they will raise as much as 20,000 crore, apart from kickstarting the exercise to launch the high-speed 5G network.

MGNREGS budget for 2024 lowest in 8 years after high of Covid times
Adjusted for inflation, the Rs 60,000 crore allocated to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the Budget for next year is the lowest allocation since 2016-17. This is despite a government assessment of the scheme hailing it as “a powerful instrument for inclusive growth in rural India”.

India’s Haj quota at around 1.75 lakh this year
Around 1.75 lakh pilgrims will be able to go for Haj to Saudi Arabia as per the quota assigned to India by Saudi Arabia this year. The application process for Haj is yet to be opened through the dedicated online portal by the ministry of minority affairs. The first batch for Haj normally leaves in May or June depending on the schedule notified and shared along with the guidelines by authorities in Saudi Arabia.

'Domestic violence case valid even if woman’s spouse lives abroad'
Any woman residing in India either temporarily or permanently is entitled to seek relief from a court of law under the Domestic Violence Act even if her spouse lives outside the country, the Madras HC said. The court dismissed a petition challenging a domestic violence complaint filed by his wife against him in a Chennai family court. "The cause of action arises in India since the aggrieved person is residing here, even if abused economically by the spouse residing in another country," he said.
