Counting of votes will be held on Sunday in the by-election to seven assembly constituencies in six states — a contest symbolic of the fierce turf war between the BJP and regional parties. The polling was held in Mokama and Gopalganj constituencies of Bihar, Andheri (East) of Maharashtra, Adampur of Haryana, Munugode of Telangana, Gola Gokarannath of Uttar Pradesh, and Dhamnagar of Odisha on November 3. MCD polls on December 4, likely to be most bitterly fought

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Union government’s response in six weeks to a PIL, which sought re-introduction of the lapsed women’s reservation bill to provide 33% quota for women in Lok Sabha and assemblies. When the court agreed to entertain the PIL filed by an NGO, the central government’s counsel argued that there are serious problems about maintainability of the petition as it has sought a writ of mandamus to the government to undertake a particular legislation.
