1/3rd of undergraduate students in India doing BA: Survey

Over 78.9% of 4.1 crore students in higher education are enrolled at the undergraduate level, and of the total enrolled students over one crore are pursuing BA. Another 17 lakh (4.2%) of the students are doing BA (Hons) from various higher education institutions. This was revealed in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-21 released on Sunday by the ministry of education.

For 100 days of NREGS jobs to all, Rs 1.8L cr will be needed

If the government were to actually provide 100 days of work to every household registered under MNREGS, it would need to allocate over Rs 1.8 lakh crore in the coming Budget assuming the number of households opting for the scheme remains at the current level. What has actually happened is a steady shrinking of the outlay after the Covid period boost to under half this amount.

50,000 years on, 'green comet' comes visiting again

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), popularly known as the "green comet", which last visited Earth's neighbourhood 50,000 years ago when the Neanderthals were still roaming its surface, can now be viewed in India with a pair of binoculars from a dark location. It may further brighten in the next few days and become visible to the naked eye as it makes its closest pass of the Earth on February 2.

Growth indicator: India's night lights up 43% in 10 yrs

Decadal Change of Night Time Light over India from Space (2012-2021), released by Isro’s National Remote Sensing Centre — shows that overall at the national level, normalised NTL radiance increased by 43% in 2021 compared to 2012. Significant increase was observed in Bihar (474%), Manipur (441%), Ladakh (280%) and Kerala (119%), while good increase was observed in Arunachal Pradesh (66%), MP (66%), UP (61%) and Gujarat (58%).

Centre set to integrate forensic probe with justice system: Shah

Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Centre will integrate forensic science-based investigation with the justice system to increase the conviction rate which is around 50% currently. Shah said the conviction rate in Canada is 62%, Israel 93%, UK 80% and the US 90%. He was in Dharwad on Saturday to lay the foundation stone for the ninth off-campus facility of the National Forensic Sciences University.

Court sets aside order on summons to Shetty sisters

Observing that the order against them was not proper or legal, in a relief to actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her sister Shamita Shetty, a Mumbai court recently quashed and set aside a 2022 magistrate court order issuing summons to them in a Rs21 lakh cheating case. The court, however, said the proceedings will continue against their mother Sunanda after finding that a prima facie case was made out against her.

Merely taking the name of the caste of the victim would not make it an offence under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, unless it is with an intention to insult the person belonging to that caste, the Karnataka high court observed recently.
