11 Jamia accused discharged, court calls them ‘scapegoats’
In a big setback to the prosecution, a Delhi court on Saturday discharged student activists Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha and eight others in a case related to the violence that took place at Jamia Millia Islamia in December 2019 saying they had been made “scapegoats” because police couldn’t catch the actual perpetrators.

For second day, Parliament paralysed over Adani row
Both Houses of Parliament remained paralysed for the second day in a row on Friday as opposition parties continued with their protests seeking debate on the Adani Group issue and demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into alleged fraud in the company’s affairs. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said opposition members who had trooped into the well of the House will be “dealt with”.

Disapproving criminalisation of soured consensual physical relationships, the Supreme Court has acquitted a man convicted concurrently by a Delhi court and the HC for raping a married woman on the promise of marriage even though she left her husband and three children to live with the man despite learning that he too was married.

PM Modi to launch blended petrol, 2 years ahead of target
PM Modi will launch E20, or petrol blended with 20% ethanol on Monday, bringing forward by two years the launch of cleaner-burning version of the common man’s fuel with the dual purpose of reducing oil imports and vehicular emission. “The PM will launch the fuel by pressing a nozzle at the ‘India Energy Week’ conference to start E20 sale at 67 pumps. We started at 1.4% ethanol blending in 2014 and achieved 10% blending five months ahead of the November 2022 target,” a govt functionary said.

Assets of Chidambaram’s wife, others seized in Saradha scam
The ED on Friday said it has attached assets worth Rs 6.3 crore in the Saradha money laundering case. The owners of the assets include Nalini Chidambaram, wife of former finance minister P Chidambaram. The ED said movable assets worth Rs 3.3 crore and properties worth over Rs 3 crore have been attached in an ongoing probe against Saradha group of companies. The agency added that these properties were owned by the Saradha group and other persons who were beneficiaries of the proceeds of crime.

SC seeks Centre’s response on BBC documentary ban
The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre seeking its response for blocking a BBC documentary, ‘India: The Modi Question’, and also directed the government to place before it the original records of the decision-making process for its perusal. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh, however, turned down a plea for an interim order to direct the Centre to make public its blocking order and said that it would itself examine the document on the next date of hearing.

Vodafone Idea gets a lifeline, govt to hold 33% stake
The Centre finally stepped in to resurrect Vodafone Idea, the ailing telecom operator, and is going ahead to pick up around 33% stake in the company to emerge as the largest shareholder. The move came after promoters Aditya Birla group and Vodafone Plc assured that they will raise as much as 20,000 crore, apart from kickstarting the exercise to launch the high-speed 5G network.

MGNREGS budget for 2024 lowest in 8 years after high of Covid times
Adjusted for inflation, the Rs 60,000 crore allocated to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the Budget for next year is the lowest allocation since 2016-17. This is despite a government assessment of the scheme hailing it as “a powerful instrument for inclusive growth in rural India”.
