Calling Jiah Khan, who died by suicide 10 years ago, a “victim of her sentiments”, a special court on Friday acquitted actor Sooraj Pancholi of the charge of abetting the suicide of his girlfriend. It also doubted the suicide note and said Jiah’s mother Rabia could not explain the delay in lodging a complaint. Twenty-five-year-old Jiah, also an actor, was found hanging in her Juhu house on June 3, 2013. She was a US citizen.

Supreme Court: If not marriage, how can lives of same-sex couples be bettered?
With the Union government driving home the judicial impossibility of disentangling the Special Marriage Act from the web of personal laws for legalising same-sex marriages, the Supreme Court asked the Centre what administrative measures could be taken to improve the day-to-day lives of same-sex couples. “Short of marriage rights... what can the government do for long cohabiting couples? They need some recognition for creating conditions for their social security and welfare," the SC said.
