G20: Putin unable to come, Modi thanks him for support

Soon-to-wed couple, businessman killed in Mumbai hotel fire

A couple, who were soon to get married, and a businessman from Gujarat died while three others suffered injuries in a fire that broke out in a second-floor room at Hotel Galaxy located in Prabhat Colony at Santacruz (E) on Sunday afternoon. CBDT gives relief, but I-T dept may reopen big old cases

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), guided by a Supreme Court (SC) order issued in April, has sent out comprehensive instructions to tax officials regarding reopening of past cases under the Income-tax (I-T) Act. The instructions dated August 23 — aimed at ensuring a uniform practice — state that there will be no reopening and reassessment of completed cases only where the decision of the appellate authorities has become final.

Govt to take up with RBI penal charges imposed by bank

The government is expected to take up the issue of penal charges levied by banks for non-maintenance of minimum balance with the Reserve Bank of India, as these yielded Rs 21,000 for state-run and private lenders over the last five years. While a government official insisted that state-run banks such as SBI do not adopt such practices, he acknowledged the problem and said the issue will be taken up with RBI.
