Romance-related frauds and ‘tech support’ pop ups, originating largely from illegal call centres and phishing gangs in India, have caused losses of more than $3 billion to gullible elderly US citizens in the last two years, according to FBI data. The trend is persisting, with total money lost by Americans in all internet/call centre-related frauds in the last 11 months having been estimated at $10.2 billion in the last 11 months of 2022, an increase of 47% against last year’s $6.9 billion.
