Goa fires reduce 100-year-old trees, wildlife to ashes

Goa’s forest fires, which have been raging for nine days now, have left behind atrail of destruction, scorching endemic trees, birds and reptiles in the Western Ghats, one of the eight biodiversity hotspots of the world. Evergreen patches and the ecological cycle which had evolved over hundreds of years have been reduced to ashes, said onground volunteers who are assisting the state administration in dousing the blaze.
