The Bihar assembly has passed bills increasing quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, and Extremely Backward Classes in government jobs and educational institutions from 50% to 65%. This brings the overall reservation to 75% when including the 10% for economically weaker sections. The bills were passed unanimously and will become law after the consent of the governor. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called for a caste census and urged BJP legislators to appeal for special category status for Bihar.
