The Institute of Science in Mumbai will be relocating a nuclear source, Californium-252 and Plutonium Beryllium, from its campus. The source, which has completed 14 half lives, is the last remnant of the institute's nuclear chemistry laboratory, which was established in 1962 but declined due to lack of funds and attention. The institute plans to expand its research in high-end areas after the source is safely removed. The decline of the institute began when the state government excluded research from a teacher's workload for salary purposes.
