The Supreme Court-appointed committee's ground situation report on ethnic conflicts in Manipur accuses state NGOs of obstructing the cremation of 88 bodies preserved in mortuaries and preventing the acceptance of ex gratia. The committee, headed by former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Gita Mittal, highlights the pressure exerted by civil society organizations (CSOs) on relatives not to accept the bodies. The report also mentions CSOs opposing the performance of last rites and maintaining tension between communities in Manipur.

Russia puts Meta spokesman on wanted list
Russian authorities have added Andy Stone, the spokesperson of US tech giant Meta, to a wanted list. Stone's inclusion on the list comes after Russian authorities classified Meta as a 'terrorist and extremist' organization. The interior ministry's database does not provide details of the charges against Stone. In February 2022, Stone was put on the wanted list, but the matter was not reported until this week. Meta's actions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to a criminal probe by Russia's federal Investigative Committee.

Silkyara tunnel breakthrough note before late Monday
The government officials remained non-committal about the timeline for the breakthrough at Silkyara tunnel to rescue 41 trapped workers citing the situation getting technically “more complex” after the joints of the auger used for horizontal drilling got broken. But going by the time it would take for taking out the entire auger machine and then carrying out manual excavation, the breakthrough is possible not before late Monday, sources said. He also said that the agencies needed to dig another 12-15 meters for the breakthrough.

Engineer, friend returning from party charred to death as car catches fire
Two friends – one an engineer and another a businessman – were charred to death when the car in which they were returning from a party went up in flames in Sector 119 early on Saturday, trapping them inside. Fire department officials said a short circuit in the car’s air conditioner may have caused the fire, locking the doors automatically. According to them, a guard deployed at the main gate of Amrapali Platinum – where one of the car’s occupants was to get off – called up the fire department at 6.25am to inform them that a white Swift was up in flames on the nearby road.

Fight deepfakes or face action, govt tells social media, Net cos
The government has warned top social media and internet companies that their platforms may be temporarily suspended and even be ordered blocked in case they are unable to tackle the menace of deepfakes. Besides, they have been advised to work out methods to issue “pop-ups” for users once they log into their accounts. The pop-ups, akin to the cautionary advice that users get when they log into their online financial investment accounts such as Zerodha, will carry the ‘no go list’ for subscribers, explicitly giving out details on what kind of content is not to be uploaded, or shared.
