MoD nod for projects worth over 2 lakh crore

The defence ministry on Thursday gave the preliminary approval for capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 2.23 lakh crore, including the procurement of 97 more Tejas fighters and 156 Prachand light combat helicopters as well as an upgrade of 84 existing Sukhoi-30MKI jets, in a hugely significant boost for indigenous defence production. The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council also accorded the acceptance of necessity (AoN) for 400 new towed artillery gun systems for Rs 9,900 crore to replace old Indian field guns and two types of Pinaka `area denial munitions’ for the Army.

Depression non-disclosure no ground to reject claim: Panel

The NCDRC has ruled that non-disclosure of ailments like depression should not be a basis for denying insurance claims by LIC. The commission stated that LIC's medical literature did not classify depression as a serious ailment and there was no record indicating that depression could lead to heart failure. Anil Patel's family approached the Kheda district consumer forum, which mandated LIC to fulfil the insurance claims. LIC contested the forum's orders, but the Gujarat State Dispute Redressal Commission upheld the decision in 2019.

Revenue official mowed down by MP mining mafia

Prashann Singh, a Madhya Pradesh revenue official, was crushed to death under a tractor by sand mining mafia in Shahdol district late Saturday. He was a patwari in Beohari revenue division. An ex-serviceman, he was an honest and diligent official of the revenue department, said his seniors. The murder, which took place at Gopalpur village on the banks of River Son, 565km east of Bhopal, around 11pm Saturday, was the latest in a string of horrific attacks by the mining mafia on police personnel and other government employees.
